The Perfect Shade

A well chosen paint color can be the biggest impact maker in your space.

It’s no secret that choosing a paint color can be a tricky endeavor, so we’ve compiled a list of our top 6 tips to make the task less daunting and guaranteed to be a smashing success.

6 TOP TIPS FOR A WELL CHOSEN PAINT COLOR:

  1. Choose Your Paint Color Last

After your furnishings, after your textiles (drapery, rugs, pillows etc.) AND after your lighting. This tip is important because the combination of furnishings and textiles can change the feel of the room drastically and can call for a different shade, depth or even color altogether. Once all of the pieces are chosen, you will be able to try different paint t swatches out to see which makes the room feel like

    you want it to.

  2. Choose the Paint Color in the Room Itself

Lighting makes all of the difference in the way a color reads. The direction the the room’s windows face and the time of day also have a huge impact on the way a color is perceived. Flooring can also change the appearance of the color swatch, so it is always best to physically be in the room when you are narrowing down options.

  3. Choose the Color Based Upon a Large Sample

Either use a large color sample or paint a small section of the wall the sample color you are considering. We love the company Sampelize for large peel and stick paint swatches for all of our favorite paint brands: Benjamin Moore, Sherwin Williams, Farrow and Ball and PPG. They offer overnight shipping and are incredibly reliable. Most paint stores will also sell you a sample quart of a color for around $8 if you want to go the route of trying it out on your wall.

  4. Time is Your Friend

Sometimes there is a definite winner amongst the samples. However, if one option doesn’t jump out at you immediately, allow yourself the gift of time. Sleep on it. Look at your space with the samples at all times of the day. It’s ok to not have a lightening bolt moment, oftentimes paint colors grow on us. If several days go by and you are still not loving any of the samples, allow yourself the grace to return to the drawing board. Restart the process and you will eventually find something you love. There are literally 1000’s of paint colors available, when you find the right one you’ll be glad you didn’t settle.

  5. The Option of Customization

If you find a hue you like but it feels too intense or the shade is a bit too dark or heavy, consider asking for a sample quart at the paint store to be made that is 10%-20% lighter. You can get any color at x% to customize the shade to suit your space.

  6. Paint is not Permanent

To alleviate any anxiety you may feel, it is helpful to remind yourself that paint is not permanent. You can re-do it fairly simply, so please never allow any fear of making a mistake hold you back from creating something extraordinary.
